Should You Have Your New Hot Water Tank Installed In A Different Location?

When people have their hot water tank replaced, they often have the new one installed right where the old one used to sit. This approach is common because it usually works well. But there are a few exceptions. Sometimes, it is worth having your plumber do the hot water tank installation in a different place than the old one. Ask yourself these questions (and discuss them with your plumber) to see whether moving the hot water tank is a smart move in your case.

How far is the current tank from your shower?

It takes time for hot water to travel through pipes. If the current hot water tank is a long way from your shower, it may take a few minutes for warm water to start coming out of the showerhead. This can be a waste of water, and it can also leave you shivering on chilly days. If you are able to have the new water tank installed closer to your shower, you won't have to let the water run for long at all before getting in.

How far is the current tank from your kitchen sink?

For most people, the kitchen sink is another frequently used tap, and if the hot water tank is a long distance from it, you may have to wait a long time for the water to get hot. Moving the hot water tank closer to the kitchen sink can cut down on waste and make it easier for you to do dishes. You may want to split the difference — placing the water heater halfway between the shower and kitchen sink.

How much new pipe would have to be run?

When you've identified a potential location for your new hot water heater, ask your plumber how much new pipe they'd have to run to install the tank in that location. If it is a lot of piping, the cost may be prohibitive.

Is there space for a vent in a different location?

If you're installing a gas hot water heater, it will need to be vented. Usually, they are vented through a PVC pipe that runs through the exterior wall. Make sure there is space to place a vent before committing to a certain installation location.

With this guidance, you can think through the option of moving your hot water tank and get a better idea of whether this approach is right for you.
