What You Should Know Before You Install A New Faucet

Installing a new faucet is not something everyone can or even should do. Installing a new faucet isn't that difficult, but if you don't have the right tools or don't have a general understanding of plumbing, then you shouldn't install the new faucet yourself. Installing a new faucet involves more than just replacing it, there are several things you should know before you attempt this. Read on for a few things to know about faucet installation.

Know Which Type And Size

You can't just install any old faucet into your sink unless you're getting an all-new sink basin as well. The holes in the sink where the faucet one was will need to line up with the new faucet you are going to install. If you have a one-hole sink, that's what you have to install, or you can add new holes for a three- or four-hole sink. You can always add holes to the sink basin if you feel comfortable with cutting the holes in, but you can't subtract holes. Be sure you get the right size and type of faucet.

Know That The Faucet May Not Be The Only Replacement

When you replace a new faucet, the faucet may not be the only thing that you have to replace. You may have to replace the plumbing beneath the sink as well. You should also replace the drain stopper in your sink as well. When you take apart the faucet, you may also notice other issues, or you could end up causing other problems for yourself. If you need to make other repairs, you should be sure to do them as needed or hire a professional plumber to do this work for you. A drain pipe replacement may be too much for you to handle, and you should hire a plumber to do the work for you.

Know That You Need To Do Prep Work

You need to prepare your sink before you install a new faucet. You may have a lot of built-up calcium around your old faucet, or you could have old caulking. Scrape the caulking and the calcium away so when you install the new faucet you don't see the ring left around your sink.

If you are going to be installing a new faucet, know that there may be more involved than you think. Hire a professional plumber to help you install the new faucet.
